Many residents in the northern province of Vinh Phuc have complained about their lives being affected by serious environmental pollution caused by a local brick factory.

Tran Van Hung, a resident in Huong Canh Town, Binh Xuyen District, said that many local people have complained about the bad odour coming from the wastewater of the Prime Vinh Phuc Joint Stock Company but the problem has continued unaddressed for a long time.

"The company has promised to deal with the situation many times, but the problem has become worse," Hung said. "After heavy rain on August 25, the bad odour from the company's wastewater reservoir has spread all over our residential area."

Head of the Dong Sau Sub-quarter, Tran Van Binh, said that the Prime Vinh Phuc Joint Stock Company started their brick production in Binh Xuyen Industrial Park in 1999 and they built the wastewater reservoir in 2012.

"As the largest brick producer in the province, the company said they had quality wastewater treatment technologies but the reservoir has caused serious pollution to surrounding residential areas," Binh said. "The black, viscous wastewater produces a foul smell and they just pour some substances into it when local people start to complain."

On August 21 and 22, many local people gathered at the company headquarters again and asked them to deal with the pollution after parts of the reservoir broke, causing wastewater to flow out into residential areas.

"The company had made many promises, but nothing has improved," Binh said. "Now we just want them to properly treat their wastewater and close the reservoir."

A representative of Binh Xuyen District People's Committee said that they had an urgent meeting with the company on August 21 after the wastewater leak and asked the company to deal with the problem as soon as possible.

"We also sent a team to collect wastewater samples at the company on August 23 as part of the investigation," he said.
